Set up a Google Alert to watch for distinctive, non-sensitive project identifiers appearing on public websites and in Google Search results.

Set up your alert

  1. Open Google Alerts and sign in to the Google account where you want to receive notifications.
  2. Create separate alerts using the exact project repository name and distinctive, non-sensitive filenames or phrases. Put exact names in quotation marks.
  3. Choose “As-it-happens” for frequency, keep sources on “Automatic,” and select the intended Gmail address under delivery options.
  4. Save the alerts, then review any match to confirm it is not your own authorized copy.

What to search for

Do not use this guide's title as a search phrase; Google may match this page itself. Instead, choose identifiers that are specific to files you want to watch. Avoid putting passwords, API keys, private URLs, student or staff data, or source-code secrets into alert queries. Google Alerts searches public web content; it does not upload or scan your project files.

Important limitation

Google Alerts may find public copies only after Google indexes them, so alerts can be delayed or miss content entirely. It cannot tell you whether a hosting provider or another person privately accessed, downloaded, or copied files, or find material behind logins or on unindexed sites. For provider access, review hosting and file access logs and ask the provider for an audit trail.
